How we source these

Public holidays are taken from official government sources for each country and cover national holidays only. The United States, Canada and Australia all have significant state and provincial holidays that are not shown, and India’s system of state, optional and restricted holidays means only three days are observed nationwide. Where a government has not yet published a year, we say so rather than guess. Always check the official source for the country concerned rather than relying on this alone.

November 8th through history

A hand in shadow on a photographic plate

Wilhelm Rontgen noticed on November 8th 1895 that a screen across his darkened laboratory at Wurzburg was glowing, although the tube producing the effect was covered in black card. He worked on alone for seven weeks before telling anyone, and then photographed his wife’s hand, showing the bones and her ring. She is said to have looked at the plate and remarked that she had seen her own death. He named the rays X for unknown, took the first Nobel Prize in Physics, and handed the prize money to his university.

On November 8th 1987 a bomb exploded beside the war memorial at Enniskillen as people gathered for the Remembrance Sunday service, killing eleven. Gordon Wilson, whose daughter Marie died in the rubble beside him, spoke on the radio that evening of holding her hand and said he bore no ill will. His words were widely credited with holding back reprisals, and he later worked for reconciliation until his death.

The Bodleian Library opened at Oxford on November 8th 1602 with some two thousand books, most of them bought by Sir Thomas Bodley out of his own pocket after he found the university’s old library stripped and empty. Readers still swear an oath not to bring fire into it.

Dracula was the evening work of a Dublin theatre manager, Bram Stoker, born on November 8th 1847, and creator of the era’s most enduring vampire. Gordon Ramsay, the Michelin-starred chef better known these days for shouting at people on television, followed at Johnstone in 1966.

Born on November 8th: star sign, birthstone and birth flower

Bram Stoker and Gordon Ramsay โ€” both named above โ€” share this star sign with everyone else born in the same window.

Star sign

Scorpio — a Water sign ruled by Mars (traditional) / Pluto (modern), symbolised by the Scorpion.

Birthstone

traditionally Topaz, or Topaz or Citrine in the modern list for November.

Birth flower

Chrysanthemum (primary), also Peony — most commonly cited sources agree on chrysanthemum as the main November flower.

None of this is settled fact in the way the history above is โ€” zodiac dates, birthstones and birth flowers are conventions rather than laws, and different sources hedge them slightly differently. The birthstone is the most standardised of the three (set by the trade in 1912 and revised since); the birth flower is the least, resting on Victorian tradition rather than any governing body.
