The first issue of the Oxford Gazette appeared on November 7th 1665. The court had moved to Oxford to escape the plague, and courtiers were reluctant to so much as hold a newspaper that had come out of London for fear of infection, so one was produced locally. When the court returned it became the London Gazette, and it has come out without a break for three and a half centuries, the oldest surviving English newspaper. It now carries insolvencies, honours and statutory notices, and is read chiefly by solicitors.

Marie Curie was born in Warsaw on November 7th 1867. She remains the only person to have won Nobel Prizes in two different sciences, and she declined to patent the process for isolating radium on the grounds that it belonged to everyone. Her notebooks are still radioactive and are kept in lead-lined boxes at the Bibliotheque nationale.

The Bolsheviks took the Winter Palace on November 7th 1917 by the Gregorian calendar, and on October 25th by the Julian one that Russia still used. Hence the October Revolution, commemorated in November for the rest of the Soviet Union’s existence.

Albert Camus, the writer and philosopher, took the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1957 and was dead within three years; he had been born on November 7th 1913. Joni Mitchell, the singer-songwriter, has the date as well, born in Alberta in 1943.
