How we source these

Public holidays are taken from official government sources for each country and cover national holidays only. The United States, Canada and Australia all have significant state and provincial holidays that are not shown, and India’s system of state, optional and restricted holidays means only three days are observed nationwide. Where a government has not yet published a year, we say so rather than guess. Always check the official source for the country concerned rather than relying on this alone.

November 1st through history

Lisbon falls on All Saints' Day

The earthquake that struck Lisbon on the morning of November 1st 1755 arrived while the churches were full for All Saints’ Day. Three shocks, a fire that burned for days and a wave up the Tagus destroyed most of the city. The shock travelled further than anyone then understood: in Scotland the water of Loch Ness surged back and forth against its banks for an hour on a windless morning, and was noted as a curiosity long before anyone connected it to Portugal.

The disaster shook European thought as much as European ground. Voltaire, who had believed with the optimists that this was the best of all possible worlds, wrote a poem about the ruins and then Candide, and the argument about how providence could permit such a thing ran for a generation.

On November 1st 1512 the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel was seen by the public for the first time, at a Mass held on the same feast day. Michelangelo had spent four years on the scaffolding, standing with his head tipped back rather than lying down as the legend has it, and had wanted the commission given to somebody else.

The Maastricht Treaty came into force on November 1st 1993 and the European Union formally existed. Britain had opt-outs from the single currency and the Social Chapter, and spent the next twenty-three years arguing about the rest.

Born on November 1st: star sign, birthstone and birth flower

L. S. Lowry and Gary Player โ€” both named above โ€” share this star sign with everyone else born in the same window.

Star sign

Scorpio — a Water sign ruled by Mars (traditional) / Pluto (modern), symbolised by the Scorpion.

Birthstone

traditionally Topaz, or Topaz or Citrine in the modern list for November.

Birth flower

Chrysanthemum (primary), also Peony — most commonly cited sources agree on chrysanthemum as the main November flower.

None of this is settled fact in the way the history above is โ€” zodiac dates, birthstones and birth flowers are conventions rather than laws, and different sources hedge them slightly differently. The birthstone is the most standardised of the three (set by the trade in 1912 and revised since); the birth flower is the least, resting on Victorian tradition rather than any governing body.
