How we source these
Public holidays are taken from official government sources for each country and cover national holidays only. The United States, Canada and Australia all have significant state and provincial holidays that are not shown, and India’s system of state, optional and restricted holidays means only three days are observed nationwide. Where a government has not yet published a year, we say so rather than guess. Always check the official source for the country concerned rather than relying on this alone.
July 16th through history
Apollo 11 leaves the ground
The Saturn V carrying Apollo 11 lifted off from Pad 39A at half past nine in the morning Florida time on July 16th 1969, which was half past two in the afternoon in Britain. Around a million people watched from the beaches and verges around the Cape, among them half of Congress and a former president. The rocket stood 363 feet tall and burned through most of two thousand tonnes of first-stage propellant in under three minutes.
The first nuclear device was detonated at Alamogordo in New Mexico at 5.29 in the morning on July 16th 1945, at a test the Americans had christened Trinity. The British Mission at Los Alamos, which included James Chadwick and William Penney, watched from a ridge some miles off. Oppenheimer’s famous line from the Bhagavad Gita was recalled in an interview two decades later rather than spoken at the time.
The Catcher in the Rye was published on July 16th 1951. Its author gave a bare handful of interviews, moved to New Hampshire and spent the following half-century declining to discuss it. The book has never been out of print.
Amundsen was lost in 1928 flying north to search for a missing airship, and his body was never found: a polar explorer who died on somebody else’s expedition. He had been born on July 16th 1872, Barbara Stanwyck, the film actress, in 1907 and Stewart Copeland, the drummer with the Police, in 1952.
Born on July 16th: star sign, birthstone and birth flower
Roald Amundsen and Ginger Rogers โ both named above โ share this star sign with everyone else born in the same window.
Star sign
Cancer — a Water sign ruled by the Moon, symbolised by the Crab.
Birthstone
Ruby for July.
Birth flower
Larkspur (primary), also Water Lily — most commonly cited sources agree on larkspur as the main July flower.
None of this is settled fact in the way the history above is โ zodiac dates, birthstones and birth flowers are conventions rather than laws, and different sources hedge them slightly differently. The birthstone is the most standardised of the three (set by the trade in 1912 and revised since); the birth flower is the least, resting on Victorian tradition rather than any governing body.
