On January 2nd 1959 the Soviet Union launched Luna 1, the first spacecraft to reach the vicinity of the Moon and the first object built by human hands to achieve escape velocity from the Earth. It missed the Moon — the intended impact never happened, thanks to a timing error in the upper stage — and sailed on into orbit around the Sun, where it remains. Failure and triumph arrived in the same telemetry.

Scottish football keeps January 2nd soberly. In 1971 sixty-six people were crushed to death on Stairway 13 at Ibrox Stadium as crowds left an Old Firm match between Rangers and Celtic. It remains the worst disaster in Scottish sporting history, and the inquiry that followed fed directly into the Safety of Sports Grounds Act 1975.

There is a quiet literary claim as well. Isaac Asimov, the science fiction writer born in Russia and raised in Brooklyn, always gave his birthday as January 2nd 1920, though the records were vague enough that he cheerfully admitted he had chosen it himself. He went on to write or edit something in the region of five hundred books.

Second of January is, for most of Britain, the day the tree starts to look tired and normal service resumes. In Scotland it is still a bank holiday.
