How we source these

Public holidays are taken from official government sources for each country and cover national holidays only. The United States, Canada and Australia all have significant state and provincial holidays that are not shown, and India’s system of state, optional and restricted holidays means only three days are observed nationwide. Where a government has not yet published a year, we say so rather than guess. Always check the official source for the country concerned rather than relying on this alone.

January 1st through history

The day Britain redrew itself — twice

New Year’s Day carries more constitutional weight in Britain than its hangover suggests. On January 1st 1801 the Act of Union came into force, merging Great Britain with the Kingdom of Ireland. The Union Flag acquired the saltire of St Patrick, and the country acquired the name it would carry, with one later amendment, into the present day.

Beginnings have a way of clustering here. On January 1st 1948 the railways were nationalised and British Railways came into being, gathering the Big Four private companies into a single state concern. Twenty-five years later the United Kingdom joined the European Economic Community alongside Ireland and Denmark — an accession undone, forty-seven years later, on January 31st 2020.

Popular culture’s contribution is a famous rejection. On January 1st 1962 four young men from Liverpool, having driven down through the snow the day before, auditioned for Decca Records in West Hampstead. Decca passed. The Beatles signed with Parlophone instead, and the tape of that audition is now among the most listened-to failures in recording history.

E. M. Forster, the novelist best known for A Passage to India and Howards End, was born in Marylebone on January 1st 1879, published his last novel at forty-five and then declined to publish another for the remaining forty-six years of his life. Sir James Frazer, the anthropologist born in Glasgow in 1854, wrote The Golden Bough, which unsettled Freud and furnished T. S. Eliot with half of The Waste Land.

Born on January 1st: star sign, birthstone and birth flower

E. M. Forster and Sir James Frazer — both named above — share this star sign with everyone else born in the same window.

Star sign

Capricorn — an Earth sign ruled by Saturn, symbolised by the Sea-Goat.

Birthstone

Garnet for January.

Birth flower

Carnation (primary), also Snowdrop — most commonly cited sources agree on carnation as the main January flower.

None of this is settled fact in the way the history above is — zodiac dates, birthstones and birth flowers are conventions rather than laws, and different sources hedge them slightly differently. The birthstone is the most standardised of the three (set by the trade in 1912 and revised since); the birth flower is the least, resting on Victorian tradition rather than any governing body.
