In the early hours of December 6th 1921, at 10 Downing Street, the Irish and British delegations signed the Anglo-Irish Treaty. Lloyd George had given the Irish side hours to decide and threatened immediate and terrible war if they refused. The Treaty created the Irish Free State as a dominion, left the six northern counties out, and required an oath to the Crown. Michael Collins wrote to a friend that night that he had signed his own death warrant. He was killed in an ambush in County Cork eight months later, aged thirty-one.

In the first week of December 1877 Thomas Edison shouted ‘Mary had a little lamb’ into a tinfoil cylinder in New Jersey and heard the machine say it back to him. He said afterwards that he had never been so taken aback in his life.

December 6th is St Nicholas’s Day, for the fourth-century bishop of Myra whose reputation for leaving money in other people’s houses at night became Sinterklaas and then Father Christmas. In the Netherlands the presents come on the eve of the feast rather than on the 25th; Belgian children wake to theirs this morning.

Preston produced two of its best-known sons on this date: Nick Park, the animator behind Wallace and Gromit, in 1958, and the cricketer Andrew Flintoff, best remembered for his all-round heroics in England’s 2005 Ashes win, in 1977.
