On December 2nd 1697 the new St Paul’s Cathedral was opened for worship with a thanksgiving service for the Peace of Ryswick, thirty-one years after the Great Fire had taken the old one. The dome was not yet built and would not be finished for another fourteen years. Parliament, unimpressed by the pace, had withheld half of Christopher Wren’s salary until the work was complete. He got the arrears, and lived to be ninety.
