The Tay Bridge goes down in a gale
On the night of December 28th 1879 the high girders of the Tay Bridge collapsed in a severe gale as the evening train from Burntisland to Dundee was crossing. The train went into the river with everyone aboard; fifty-nine people are known to have died, though contemporary estimates ran as high as seventy-five. The bridge had been open nineteen months and Queen Victoria had travelled over it. The inquiry found that the design had made no proper allowance for wind pressure, that the ironwork was poorly cast and the maintenance worse. Its engineer, Thomas Bouch, died within the year.
The Lumiere brothers gave the first commercial film show on December 28th 1895, in a basement room of the Grand Cafe on the Boulevard des Capucines in Paris: ten short films, thirty-three people, a franc each. Louis Lumiere is said to have described the cinema as an invention without any future.
The results of the general election held a fortnight earlier were declared on December 28th 1918. Constance Markievicz, then in Holloway prison, became the first woman elected to the House of Commons. As a Sinn Fein member she never took her seat.
