A wave crosses the Indian Ocean
On the morning of December 26th 2004 an earthquake of magnitude 9.1 off Sumatra lifted the sea floor and sent waves across the Indian Ocean. Around 230,000 people in fourteen countries were killed, about 150 of them British. There was no warning system in the ocean at the time. On a beach in Phuket a ten-year-old English girl, Tilly Smith, recognised the receding sea from a geography lesson given a fortnight before and warned her family; the beach was cleared in time.
Boxing Day most likely takes its name from the Christmas box: money collected through the year in earthenware boxes, handed to servants, apprentices and tradesmen on the day after Christmas, when they were released to visit their own families. It is also St Stephen’s Day, the feast on which Good King Wenceslas looked out.
