Carols across the wire on Christmas Eve
On Christmas Eve 1914 British troops in Flanders heard carols coming from the German trenches and saw small trees and candles on the enemy parapet. In several sectors the firing stopped, men climbed out into No Man’s Land, and the two sides swapped cigarettes and tinned beef, buried their dead and kicked a ball about. Adeste Fideles was sung by both sides at once, in Latin, the one version they shared. Orders went out against any repetition the next year.
The same morning a German seaplane dropped a bomb on Dover, the first to fall on British soil from an aircraft. It landed in a garden, broke a quantity of glass and knocked a gardener out of the tree he was pruning; accounts disagree on whether he was hurt.
Bill Anders photographed the Earth rising above the lunar horizon on December 24th 1968. He said afterwards that they had come all that way to explore the Moon, and had discovered the Earth. Late that evening in America, the small hours of Christmas morning here, they read the opening of Genesis to the largest television audience yet assembled.
