The Sex Disqualification (Removal) Act received Royal Assent on December 23rd 1919. In a single sentence it provided that nobody should be disqualified by sex or marriage from holding public office, serving on a jury, or entering any civil profession. Within three years women were being called to the Bar, admitted as solicitors, sworn as magistrates and elected to the Institute of Chartered Accountants. The universities were slower than the professions: Cambridge did not award women full degrees until 1948.
At Bell Laboratories in New Jersey on December 23rd 1947, John Bardeen and Walter Brattain demonstrated to their management a device made of gold foil, a plastic wedge and a sliver of germanium, which amplified a signal with no moving parts and no vacuum. It was the transistor. The newspapers gave it a few paragraphs well inside.
