How we source these

Public holidays are taken from official government sources for each country and cover national holidays only. The United States, Canada and Australia all have significant state and provincial holidays that are not shown, and India’s system of state, optional and restricted holidays means only three days are observed nationwide. Where a government has not yet published a year, we say so rather than guess. Always check the official source for the country concerned rather than relying on this alone.

December 1st through history

Nancy Astor walks into the Commons

On December 1st 1919 Nancy Astor was led into the House of Commons between Lloyd George and Arthur Balfour, and became the first woman to take a seat there. Constance Markievicz had been elected a year earlier but, as a Sinn Fein member, declined to attend. Astor had won Plymouth Sutton at a by-election caused by her husband inheriting a peerage. Churchill admitted that he had found her arrival as unwelcome as an intruder in his bathroom, where he had nothing to defend himself with but a sponge. She sat for twenty-six years.

The two halves of the Channel Tunnel service tunnel met beneath the seabed on December 1st 1990. Graham Fagg from Dover and Philippe Cozette from Calais shook hands through a gap in the chalk, roughly forty metres below the seabed. It was the first fixed link between Britain and the Continent since the land bridge flooded some eight thousand years ago.

The first World AIDS Day was held on December 1st 1988. The two World Health Organization officers who proposed it chose the date because it fell after the American elections and before Christmas, when the news desks would have room for it.

December 1st opens meteorological winter, the Met Office preferring whole months to the wandering solstice, and the first door on the Advent calendar, a German invention that reached Britain in the 1950s.

Born on December 1st: star sign, birthstone and birth flower

Riz Ahmed and Bette Midler โ€” both named above โ€” share this star sign with everyone else born in the same window.

Star sign

Sagittarius — a Fire sign ruled by Jupiter, symbolised by the Archer.

Birthstone

traditionally Turquoise or Lapis Lazuli, or Turquoise, Tanzanite or Zircon in the modern list for December.

Birth flower

Narcissus or Holly (primary), also Poinsettia — most commonly cited sources agree on narcissus or holly as the main December flower.

None of this is settled fact in the way the history above is โ€” zodiac dates, birthstones and birth flowers are conventions rather than laws, and different sources hedge them slightly differently. The birthstone is the most standardised of the three (set by the trade in 1912 and revised since); the birth flower is the least, resting on Victorian tradition rather than any governing body.
