A king signs himself out of the job
On December 10th 1936 Edward VIII signed the Instrument of Abdication at Fort Belvedere in Windsor Great Park. His three brothers signed beneath him as witnesses, in order of seniority. The document took effect the following day, when the Declaration of Abdication Act received Royal Assent, and the first of those brothers became George VI. Edward had reigned for 326 days and was never crowned; the coronation robes already being made were altered to fit his successor.
The Nobel Prizes are presented on December 10th, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death in 1896. He had made his fortune from dynamite, and left almost all of it to fund the prizes, to the fury of his relatives, who contested the will for years.
